Prisoners join hunger strike by the thousands

The hunger strike started by Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-chair Leyla Guven to demand an end to the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Ocalan continues in all prisons. On march 1 2019 thousands of political prisoners joined the indefinite hunger strike.

In the Van High Security Closed Prison fro example 143 prisoners have joined on march 1. The indefinite non-alternating hunger strike has been launched by Cihan Tamur, Azim Sokemen, Sahin Oncu, Bahtiyar Kemal Hasan and Baris Kahraman in the Van Type T Closed Prison and is on day 86.

In the Mardin Type E Closed Prison 9 prisoners had launched an indefinite nonalternating hunger strike on January 5 demanding an end to the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Ocalan. The number of hunger strikers has risen to 142 when new prisoners, including 14 women, joined on March 1. All prisoners have reportedly joined the hunger strike, except minors, sick prisoners and prisoners with less than one year sentence left.

The prison administrations launched disciplinary inquiries against many of the prisoners.
